What do head lice and nits look like?
These are video images of live head lice. The first video image shows an adult head louse crawling along a human hair. The speed of the head louse is about 1ft per min
(~ 0.3m/min). This video demonstrates how head lice can easily and quickly move along and between hairs. (more Head lice images)
The second video image shows a head louse digesting human blood. Head lice blood is clear so the dark red human blood can be seen clearly in the insect stomach.
These moving video image movies were taken using a digital optical microscope.
